Our Mission Statement
Cherokee Thanksgiving provides free meals on Thanksgiving Day for those in our community who would otherwise not have a Thanksgiving meal. We focus not only on those who are economically disadvantaged, but those who are serving the community and are not able to have a meal with their own family (emergency service providers, care facility workers, etc.).
History
A Tradition of Holiday Giving Since 1992
- Cherokee Thanksgiving started in 1992 by Don Stevens and his family.
- The original mission was to provide meals locally, on Thanksgiving Day, to those in need. We now also provide meals to community workers, including many local police and fire departments.
- Utilizing volunteers from all over the community, meals have been delivered to thousands of individuals and families for the past 29 years.
- The number of meals served in 2021 was 2,400, 700 meals were picked up and 1,700 were delivered.
- The area served has also grown to include not only Canton, but Woodstock, Acworth, Holly Springs, Ball Ground and most of Pickens County.
- We continue to raise awareness of our organizations need to raise the community’s awareness of our mission and how each person can help.
