Mission

Cherokee Thanksgiving provides free meals on Thanksgiving Day for those in our community who would otherwise not have a Thanksgiving meal. We focus not only on those who are economically disadvantaged, but those who are serving the community and are not able to have a meal with their own family (emergency service providers, care facility workers, etc.).

History

  • Cherokee Thanksgiving started in 1992 by Don Stevens and his family.
  • The original mission was to provide meals locally, on Thanksgiving Day, to those in need. We now also provide meals to community workers, including many local police and fire departments.
  • Utilizing volunteers from all over the community, meals have been delivered to thousands of individuals and families for the past 28 years.
  • The number of meals prepared has steadily increased, but with COVID, the number of meals served increased from 2,200 in 2019 to 2,600 in 2020.
  • The area served has also grown to include not only Canton, but Woodstock, Acworth, Holly Springs, Ball Ground and most of Pickens County. In addition, over 500 people picked up their meals from Williamson Brothers on Thanksgiving Day 2020.
  • With the 2020 increase in meals, our organization needs to raise the community’s awareness of our mission and how each person can help.
