32nd Annual Cherokee Thanksgiving

November 28, 2024

Mission

Cherokee Thanksgiving provides free meals on Thanksgiving Day for those in our community who would otherwise not have a Thanksgiving meal. We focus not only on those who are economically disadvantaged, but those who are serving the community and are not able to have a meal with their own family (emergency service providers, care facility workers, etc.).

History

  • Cherokee Thanksgiving started in 1992 by Don Stevens and his family.
  • The original mission was to provide meals locally, on Thanksgiving Day, to those in need. We now also provide meals to community workers, including many local police and fire departments.
  • Utilizing volunteers from all over the community, meals have been delivered to thousands of individuals and families for over 30 years.
  • The number of meals served each year is approximately 2,600 including deliveries and pickups.
  • The area served has also grown to include not only Canton, but Woodstock, Acworth, Holly Springs, Ball Ground and specific areas of Pickens County.
  • We continue to raise community awareness of our mission and how each person can help.

Board and Key Volunteers

Cheryl Mosely

President

Cheryl McBratney Mosely is in her 19th year as a volunteer with Cherokee Thanksgiving and her 18th year as the coordinator of the event. Cheryl originally volunteered to help with Cherokee Thanksgiving to honor her mother's memory. Thanksgiving was the holiday she enjoyed the most and helping with this event made her feel closer to her during this time. Cheryl is a member of Canton First Methodist Church where Cherokee Thanksgiving was hosted until the COVID pandemic forced it to move.

"I have received so much more than I have been able to give. Coordinating and staging an event that now feeds over 2000 people on Thanksgiving Day could be very difficult, but with the amazing group of key volunteers and the support from Williamson Brothers and nearly 200 volunteers that come together to make Cherokee Thanksgiving happen it is a wonderful day of organized chaos filled with many blessings."

Cheryl, originally from Kansas, resides in Cherokee County and has a son Zachery.
